Crab Apple Prop Concept

This university project is based upon the Crab Apple from Toby Fox's Undertale, which has celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Within Undertale, the items you collect are never shown with usually only a sentence or two of flavour text. This makes it the perfect base for concepting, as not only is Undertale one of my absolute favourite games with wonderful world building making it easy to think of ways to place my concepts into the scenery, but also the vagueness of the flavour texts allows for vast experimentation.

“An aquatic fruit that resembles a crustacean” is how the Crab Apple is described. It's not even specifically a "crab" or an "apple", which is an interesting thought process to explore, of course with this. being a university project, I had to move quickly to explore everything that I wanted to, so I stuck to a literal crab apple. However, with the Crab Apple being sold by Gerson in Waterfall, I wanted to show how it adapted to it's environment which is why the centre is slightly hollow like a lot of fruits that grow in and by water like cranberries and water apples so that they float.

The overall idea was to create the 'perfect' apple- red, round and shiny like the apples in childhood cartoons. Undertale is a catalyst for whimsy and child-like wonder, so the nostalgia of a perfect cartoon feels like a wonderful way to pay homage.
